Not too pleased with the new gen 5 AbusI don't know, this is a disappointment really. I'm a big fan of Shimano and Daiwa baitcasters, and I actually really liked a lot of the gen 4 Abu reels too. The MGXtreme, the JDM ALC BF7 and the lovely gen 4 Revo Premier. Those reels were all really pleasant to use. I enjoyed using some of them over Shimano and Daiwa reels.
Comparing this new generation to the previous generation Abu reels is disappointing. I own this very reel and it's not refined at all. It feels like a dowgrade. It's absolutely not as smooth as the previous gen Premier (which was in this price range), it feels way more hollow and the plastic feels incredibly cheap and flexes like nothing. On top of this, I find the brake dial pretty hard to adjust. It's tighter than I'd like it to be. Another thing that bothers me is how bad the paint finish is.
There are a couple of good things though. 1. The handle. It's absolutely fantastic. I'll probably contact Abu to just buy the handle for one of my other reels. No play in the knobs and really nice grips. Oh, and it's a carbon handle which I like. 2. The braking system is actually pretty nice. Very versatile. Feels free enough. No complaints. 3. The spool is something I enjoy as well. Again, versatile.
But that's it. The quality overall has went down. The previous gen 4 Abus also had nice spools and nice brakes. So when you look at it, the only real upgrade from the previous generation is the handle. I would not say that's worth the price. I'll keep trying a couple of different Abus in this generation, but I'd stay away.
PerfectIm extremely impressed!! Ive owned high end reels from every big name company there is. IVE NEVER been more pleased with a reel. I fish it on (Trika 7'3 MH 6x) and throw everything from 1/4 to 3/4 without making an adjustment. takes very little to get the spool going Its a true , versatile, can do most anything reel. Extremely recommended from me!
